“You know I have a lot of faith in our government and in bipartisan ability to come to an agreement and a deal. I mean, ultimately it really matters that our government is working, especially during busy travel times like the holidays. My trip back will be a long way. I’m going to Alaska to go home and I’ll have several connections, so it could really affect my personal travel to and from.”

12. SOUNDBITE (English) John McKinney, New Jersey resident:
“They worked out a deal and the president comes in, or the president to be, that’s the problem, he’s not the president, and he wants to change the thing. You need a consistent leader. The one thing that Trump is not is consistent. And we’re seeing that right now a month before he becomes president. I just can’t imagine what it’s going to be like once he is president.”

14. SOUNDBITE (English) Nancy Ronk, Roseburg, Oregon resident:
“Trump’s doing a great job, I think. He’s taking care of business. He’s getting in there and getting everything set up, getting ready to go. He, I felt he did a good job his first four years, but my opinion.”

16. SOUNDBITE (English) John McKinney, New Jersey resident:
“It’s somewhat frightening that unelected people with lots of money get listened to. But that’s a traditional American problem. This is the first time that I’m aware of in my lifetime where somebody who’s not a government official, who’s the richest man in the world is cheek to jowl with the president to be.”

STORYLINE:
The House has rejected President-elect Donald Trump’s new plan to fund federal operations and suspend the debt ceiling a day before a government shutdown.
Democrats and some Republicans are refusing to accommodate his sudden demands and the quick fix cobbled together by Republican leaders.
In a hastily convened evening vote punctuated by angry outbursts over the self-made crisis. House Speaker Mike Johnson appears determined to try again before Friday’s midnight deadline.
It would have kept government running for three months and suspended the debt limit for two years. House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries calls the new plan “laughable.”
