STORYLINE:
An Israeli airstrike hit a house in the central Gaza Strip killing five people, including one boy and two women, and injuring seven others on Thursday, according to hospital officials and an Associated Press journalist.
The strike hit at around 1 a.m. on Thursday.
Those killed and injured at Maghazi refugee camp in Deir al-Balah were transferred to Al-Aqsa Hospital, where AP footage showed medics treating an apparently malnourished girl on a hospital bed who was bleeding from her face and severely shaking.
Shortly after the strike, a boy who was among the dead was transferred from an ambulance to the hospital morgue on a stretcher.
In the early hours of Thursday morning, several people carried the body of a dead man to the hospital.
Some people gathered at the destruction site Thursday morning, trying to pull out those trapped under the rubble of a partially collapsed building using basic tools such as a shovel.
"No place is safe. Not the tents nor the houses or any place in the Gaza Strip is safe. It is all targeted," said Um Abed Darweesh, a displaced woman.
Outside the hospital, dozens gathered to perform a funeral prayer for the bodies which were wrapped in white shrouds before they were moved for burial.
One body was loaded onto a donkey cart to be taken to the burial.
More than 45,000 Palestinians have now been killed in the war in Gaza between Israel and Hamas militants, health officials in the embattled territory said Monday, as often-stalled ceasefire negotiations appeared to be gaining ground.
The ministry’s count does not distinguish between civilians and combatants, but it has said more than half of the fatalities are women and children.
The Israeli military says it has killed more than 17,000 militants, without providing evidence.
Most of the rest were released during a ceasefire last year.
