STORYLINE:
Excitement filled the air as Pakistanis cheered on 15 contestants vying for the win in a popular donkey cart race held earlier this week.
The contestants raced through the streets of southern Karachi, each hoping to go home with the cash prize awarded to the winner.
The 3.5 kilometer (2.17 miles) race started at Karachi’s Boat Basin area.
The winner Muhammad Arif received 100,000 Pakistani rupees (around $360) for securing the first place along with his donkey Sartaj.
Arif, who is a regular participant in donkey races, said he struggled with the traffic on the road during the race.
"However, my hard work has paid off. And thank God, I won," he added.
Donkeys are highly valued in Pakistan, where they are considered a source of livelihood.
This is true for donkey owner Shahjahan, who carefully looks after his donkey Jani.
"My livelihood depends on the donkey," Shahjahan said while grooming and cleaning Jani.
"I pay more attention to the donkey than my children because my livelihood relies on it. If the donkey is not well, I won’t be able to earn money," he added.
