“It’s not that it raises the stakes. It just actually makes me like, hold on to my own jacket, you know what I mean? I’m sort of like, okay, now they’re so funny that all I want to do is be like the best version of myself. You know what I mean? Like, so it’s not like (makes intimidated noise). It’s like, Okay, I’m going to settle in comfortable.”

13. SOUNDBITE (English) John Mulaney, actor/comedian – on ‘All In: Comedy About Love’:
“Well, it’s interesting with these – I read Simon, I read all of his books. I’d done one of his audio books. And I’ve worked with Simon so much that I’d read everything he’d written. So, I was pretty familiar with it. And they really reminded me of things he and I wrote together or that I watched performed on ‘Saturday Night Live’ by him, as well as ‘Man Seeking Woman’ and ‘Miracle Workers.’ So, like, I felt like I had a handle on what he wanted. And that’s what’s most important to me is am I doing them the way he would like? You know. He’s such a gifted, specific writer that I don’t want to, you know, fuck it up.”

16. SOUNDBITE (English) John Mulaney, actor/comedian – on how fatherhood has affected his comedic writing:
"Oh, it’s much less precise. There used to be limitless time in the day and tons of sleep to remember every little nuance and syllable of every little joke — that’s gone. So, I think in some ways it’s benefited from that. Ten percent less clever, but perhaps funnier."

19. SOUNDBITE (English) Renée Elise Goldsberry, actor:
“Getting ready for tonight is different than any other opening night because I feel like to — we didn’t have as much time. Normally, when in theater, you’ve been working on a show for a very long time. This is like week two. And so, it’s really important that we trust the material. It’s really important that we trust each other, and it’s really important that we trust ourselves. And I think we do. And the affirmation that we get throughout the night is that people are laughing their heads off.”
