Syrian army soldiers line up to reconcile their status with new interim government

“We have opened this centre in Latakia province, the centre receives all those who were affiliated with the former ousted regime. The idea of the reconciliation centre is to give the soldiers reconciliation ID for three months that allows him to move freely and safely in Syria."

STORYLINE:
Hundreds of Syrian soldiers and officers lined up on Tuesday outside a reconciliation centre in Latakia city in northern Syria.

The aim was to register the details of former soldiers with the new interim government so they cold get new identity cards that would allow them to live and move freely in Syria.

Former soldiers entering the centre filled out an application from with all their information, after receiving an application number and posing for a photograph with it.

The new Syrian interim government gave safety assurances and amnesty to soldiers and police officers who hadn’t taken part in torture and killing during Assad’s rule.

“The idea of the reconciliation centre is to give the soldier reconciliation ID for three months that allows him to move freely and safely in Syria,” said Mohammad Mustafa, a state security officer in the new interim government.

Mustafa added that all weapons would be taken away from the former soldiers.

The new administration called on people to go back to work and urged Syrian refugees around the world to return to help rebuild.

It announced plans to rehabilitate and vet the security forces to prevent the return of “those with blood on their hands".
