STORYLINE:
Protesters marched in Lebanon’s capital Beirut on Monday to celebrate the end of Bashar Assad’s rule in Syria after the former president fled his country earlier this month.

Participants lit candles and marched from Martyrs’ Square to Samir Kassir Square in downtown, chanting "Bashar is out, Syria is free" and "long live Syria, Assad has fallen."

"After all the crimes we have endured as Lebanese, Syrians, and even Palestinians, we are standing together as one united Arab people," said said protester Ziad Yamout.

The event highlighted the strained relationship between Lebanon and Syria, particularly under the 50-year rule of the Assad family which was marked by a decades-long Syrian military presence in Lebanon.

"Lebanon and Syria are tied up together, so the atrocities that happened in Syria happened in Lebanon. Finally we both have freedom, the Syrian people and the Lebanese people," said independent lawmaker Mark Daou who attended the march.

Assad fled the country earlier in December, bringing to a dramatic close his nearly 14-year struggle to hold onto control as his country fragmented in a brutal civil war that became a proxy battlefield for regional and international powers.

The war has killed nearly half a million people and displaced half of the country’s prewar population of 23 million.

International rights groups and prosecutors alleged widespread use of torture and extrajudicial killings in Syria’s government-run detention centers.
