2. SOUNDBITE (English) Sharren Haskel, Deputy Israeli Foreign Minister:
“The situation is very complicated, obviously. Our attempt and our actions within Syria mainly is to make sure that terrorist organisations don’t have access to highly sophisticated weapons, ballistic missiles, including chemical weapons as well. I think that no one in this world, after seeing the images of the first Syrian war in which Assad used, the allegation, that he used chemical weapons against families and children, those images are still haunting many people around the world. I’m not sure that this person (Ahmad al-Sharaa/Abu Mohammed al-Golani) is not going to misuse chemical weapons as well. Do you think it’s safe to keep it there in his hands? My answer will be no."

STORYLINE:
Israel’s deputy foreign minister said on Tuesday that recent strikes by Israel in Syria were meant ensure "terrorist organisations" don’t have access to highly sophisticated weapons.
“I’m not sure that this person (Ahmad al-Sharaa/Abu Mohammed al-Golani) is not going to misuse chemical weapons as well. Do you think it’s safe to keep it there in his hands? My answer will be no," said Sharren Haskel during a media briefing while holding pictures of the leader of the insurgency that toppled Syria’s Assad.
On Thursday the global chemical weapons watchdog opened an emergency meeting to discuss the situation in Syria over concerns about the country’s stockpile of toxic chemicals in the wake of the overthrow of former President Bashar Assad.
The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons last week told Syria that it is under obligations to comply with rules to safeguard and destroy dangerous substances, such as chlorine gas, after rebels entered the capital, Damascus, over the weekend.
Fernando Arias González, the OPCW secretary also expressed concern about ongoing Israeli airstrikes in Syria general.
