STORYLINE:
Residents mourned their relatives after a series of Israeli strikes Sunday in the northern half of the Gaza Strip killed more than 30 people, including women and children, Palestinian medical officials said.
One strike hit the Khalil Aweida school in the town of Beit Hanoun early in the day and killed at least 15 people, according to the Kamal Adwan hospital in the nearby town of Beit Lahiya, where the casualties were taken. The dead included two parents and their daughter, a father and his son, the hospital said.
In Gaza City, at least 17 people including women and children were killed in three separate airstrikes that hit houses sheltering displaced people, according to the al-Ahly Baptist hospital.
The dead included six women and five children, the hospital said. Among them were two parents and their daughter, another two parents and their two children, and a man and his wife, a casualty list showed.
In Deir Al-Balah, central Gaza Strip, at least three civil defense workers were killed as Israeli forces continued to pound Gaza on Sunday, bringing the Palestinian death toll in the war close to 45,000.
"These colleagues who were martyred all yesterday were working, and this morning they were working and did not return to their homes," said the victims’ colleague Kerem Al Dalou.
A strike hit a work point for Gaza’s civil defense agency in the urban Nuseirat refugee camp, Al-Awda Hospital said. Among those killed was the head of the agency in Nuseirat, according to al-Aqsa Martyrs hospital. The civil defense is Gaza’s main rescue agency and operates under the Hamas-run government.
The war in Gaza began after Hamas and other militants from Gaza stormed southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, killing some 1,200 people and taking well over 200 hostages.
Israel’s retaliatory offensive has killed almost 45,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry. The ministry’s count does not distinguish between combatants and civilians, but it says over half of the dead have been women and children.
