"For us, this is the evidence that (Serbia’s) Secret Intelligence Service along with the Ministry of Interior has been using invasive spyware practically on everyone who thinks differently from the government, that means NGOs, students, activists and now we have the proof, we have the evidence as it is stated in the report that this spyware programs have been used to practically compromise these people, to intimidate them, to harass them in order to reduce, you know, the opposition, the protests and everything that these people were doing trying to fight for democracy and human rights in this country."

"So it’s quite massive. This includes financial transactions. As we know now from the Amnesty report this includes digital surveillance but probably also other means which we are not aware of at this point in time, how they are monitoring and watching and intimidating everything that we do."

12. SOUNDBITE (English) Igor Bandovic, Director of the Belgrade Centre for Security Policy:
"This spyware was used usually after the people were arrested. Their phones were taken off of them and in the meantime, while they were interrogating, their phones were hacked and infected. In comparison with Pegasus and Predator which are much more sophisticated tools and actually you can activate them remotely and from distance, in this case you need to have physical contact with the victim’s phone."

14. SOUNDBITE (English) Igor Bandovic, Director of the Belgrade Centre for Security Policy:
"This report and everything that is going on these days is also a proof that although we have, as Amnesty said, digital prison basically in this country. It cannot be stopped, we have increasing number of people who are protesting in the streets every day, so I think if the goal of theses spyware attacks is to prevent this from happening, it is obviously not."

STORYLINE:
Serbia’s secret service and police have been spying on journalists and opposition activists by installing a spyware on their mobile phones, Amnesty International said Monday.

The watchdog’s report, backed by testimonies of those who claim their phones have been hacked in recent months, says the spy software was used to unlock phones to capture covert screenshots and copy contact lists, which were then uploaded to a government-controlled server.

Igor Bandovic, director of the Belgrade Centre for Security Policy, said the report is proof the country is in a "digital prison."

"This is the evidence that (Serbia’s) Secret Intelligence Service along with the Ministry of Interior has been using invasive spyware practically on everyone who thinks differently from the government," he said.
