Each year the Dutch city of Deventer transforms into a pocket of 19th-century England for a weekend.

Residents and visitors dress up in Victorian costumes to bring the characters of Charles Dickens to life.

STORYLINE:

Grubby young street urchins, finely dressed ladies and gentlemen in top hats.

The Dutch city of Deventer has been transformed into the 19th century world of Charles Dickens.

Merchants peddle antiques and gingerbread, while people portraying pickpockets try to avoid being tossed in a mock Marshalsea Prison.

Look closely and maybe you’ll spot Oliver Twist or Ebenezer Scrooge among the crowd.

This event was started by eighty-four-year-old Emmy Strik.

It began as a protest against rules that stopped her from opening her antique shop on Sundays.

But it’s evolved into an annual festival and Strik has collected more than 1,000 Dickensian costumes for it.

If you want to wear your own outfit, she insists on checking it’s authentic.

“All the clothes are my clothes, so some have a little bit themselves, then I ask them to send me a photo (of their clothes) because I will see if it’s really Dickensian,” says Strik.
