STORYLINE:
The vinyl records that shaped the rhythm of older generations regained renewed prominence this weekend in Cuba.

Despite being used a thousand times, on Friday night, the music that made young people dance and gathered dozens of avid collectors, this analogue musical medium was played once more.

The Havana RPM Festival demonstrated that the interest in vinyl has not diminished in Cuba, a country that has been notable for decades in its production and distribution, and where a significant portion of its classic sound heritage is preserved.

In an old warehouse on Avenida del Puerto, a handful of Cuban and foreign DJs -Italians and Canadians—were scheduled to sample, as they say in their slang, the task of mixing music for two days with vinyl records.

There was also a fair for collectors and music lovers to exchange or sell records—especially those of Cuban music—characterized by their large cardboard covers and colorful artwork.

DJ Reitt specializes in sampling vinyl featuring Cuban music, from the Van Van to the Aragon Orchestra, Iraquere, and Celia Cruz.

Cuba had been a bastion of vinyl production and distribution, especially since the creation of the Panart company, which made records on the island, in strong competition with global companies such as RCA Victor and Columbia, which brought them from abroad.

Following the 1959 revolution, state intervention took place.

Transnational companies withdrew, and in 1964, the national company EGREM was established.

It dominated this sector without competition until the 1980s when other formats began to emerge.

EGREM executives announced last month that they intend to resume limited vinyl production by 2025.

This move is driven by a global trend that returns them to the most exclusive markets and is requested by artists performing abroad.
