STORYLINE:
Mourners prayed over bodies wrapped in plastic and blankets outside a central Gaza hospital on Sunday after nine Palestinians were killed in overnight Israeli strikes on refugee camps, health officials said.
The dead were brought to the al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir al-Balah where they were counted by workers and Associated Press journalists.
Four people including a child were killed in a strike just after midnight on a tent camp in another part of the city.
Footage showed children in the camp surrounded by the damage to their makeshift shelters.
"We were asleep. We started running like crazy, looking for our sons and daughters and running away," described displaced Palestinian Salim Abu Halima.
A separate strike on a house in the Bureij urban refugee camp killed a couple and their three daughters, according to hospital officials.
Israel’s ongoing offensive in Gaza has killed at least 44,800 Palestinians in Gaza, more than half of them women and children, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, which does not say how many were combatants.
The October 2023 Hamas attack that sparked the war killed some 1,200 people in Israel, mostly civilians, and around 250 others were taken hostage.
