STORYLINE:
Hundreds of protesters gathered on Saturday in Avignon in support of Gisèle Pélicot, whose husband is on trial for allegedly recruiting men to join him in drugging and raping her.
“We are here to denounce all the horrors uttered by the 51 co-defendants and their lawyers during the Mazan trial”, an activist said, carrying placards vowing to “stop rape culture”
A group of women, dressed like the feminist character “Rosie the Riveter” danced in front of the courthouse entrance.
The crowd also sang protest songs, some of them explicitly referring to Gisèle Pelicot’s decision to wave anonymity in a case that has shaken French society.
Pelicot’s courage during the harrowing proceedings has transformed her into an icon for campaigners fighting against sexual violence.
Three weeks ago, prosecutors laid out the verdicts and punishments they want for the defendants. Many of them deny having raped Gisèle Pélicot, saying her then-husband manipulated them or that they believed she was consenting.
“We’re here to apply pressure too”, said activist Marine Thebaud. “We hope that justice will be proportionate to the acts committed against Gisèle.”
The court is expected to deliver its verdicts before Dec. 20.
