US lawmakers: Chinese-owned TikTok a security risk | DW News

The US Supreme Court announced it is taking up the case involving one of the world’s most popular social media apps TikTok against the United States government, which is threatening to ban it. The stage is set for a landmark ruling affecting millions of American users. Whatever the nine justices decide, it’s likely to set a precedent in digital media law in the future.
TikTok appealed to the highest court in the land to block legislation passed earlier this year, which sets a January 19th deadline for the app’s Chinese owner ‘ByteDance’ to sell its US version. Otherwise, it must be removed from US app stores and internet hosts. US lawmakers say TikTok is a security risk because China’s communist authorities could access US users’ data.
