"We do not think this is the end. We believe this is just the beginning for us to fight in any way possible. As President Yoon Seok Yeol mentioned in his recent statement, he said he would stand firm against impeachment or investigations. We, the freedom-loving citizens, believe that he has this confidence because there is clear evidence of election fraud (in April’s general election) or some other reason behind it."

STORYLINE:
Huge crowds of supporters of South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol rallied in central Seoul on Saturday to oppose the parliament’s vote on impeachment against him.

Urging parliament to withdraw the impeachment motion and criticizing the opposition party, protesters chanted and waved banners that read "We oppose impeachment!" and "Arrest (opposition leader) Lee Jae-myung."

Protesters grew subdued after hearing Yoon had been impeached. Yet, some of the supporters still showed determination to continue their fight against his removal from office.

The National Assembly passed the motion in a 204-85 vote on Saturday. Yoon’s presidential powers and duties will be suspended after the copies of a document on the impeachment are delivered to him and to the Constitutional Court.

The court has up to 180 days to determine whether to dismiss Yoon as president or restore his powers. If he’s thrown out of office, a national election to choose his successor must be held within 60 days.

After the vote results came out, Yoon issued a statement saying he would “never give up” and calling for officials to maintain stability in government functions during what he described as a “temporary” pause of his presidency.

“Holding in my heart all the criticism, encouragement, and support directed at me, I will do my best for the country until the very last moment,” he said.
