“France is a secular country. The State is secular and in Corsica we are experiencing something different because in Corsica there is no divorce, there is no division, there is a separation as far as secularism is concerned, but there is no division. This is important, and it means that there is a mature, adult and responsible collaboration between the civil authorities, mayors, deputies, senators, officials and the religious authorities. There is no divorce between the two. There is no hostility between the two. And that’s a very positive aspect because in Corsica there is no ideological hostility.“
19. Mid of Cardinal
20. SOUNDBITE (French) François Bustillo, Cardinal of Ajaccio:
“We’re expecting a lot of people, so we’re talking about 100,000 to 120,000 people. At the Mass there will be fewer people, but the Pope will also be travelling around in the popemobile. So he’ll be meeting people in different parts of the city. The important thing for us was that there should be this popular aspect of the Pope in the midst of his people, so that he can say, ‘Here I am’. And we’re trying to guide and order and organise this movement so that everything goes well and there’s no danger to the population.”

STORYLINE:
Anticipation is building on the eve of Pope Francis’s visit to the Mediterranean island of Corsica on Sunday.
The one-day trip to the French island region is to close out a diocesan conference on popular piety in Ajaccio, the capital.
While Francis will meet with President Emmanuel Macron at the airport before returning to Rome, the trip is in some way a snub of the French leader who had invited Francis to travel to Paris the previous weekend to preside over the grand reopening of Notre Dame.
