3. SOUNDBITE (English) Dave Marshall, Battle of the Bulge veteran:
“It was a matter of subsisting the weather, rather than the Germans. Fighting them was not the problem. Fighting the weather was the problem. Snow this high, very difficult. To move your equipment around, slogging through the snow, was hard.”
4. Marshall showing an old picture of himself during the war, UPSOUND (English) Dave Marshall, Battle of the Bulge veteran: “The mortar was my piece of equipment. And this is in the snow. And you see what I’m wearing. Very very light. I don’t have an overcoat, I have a field jacket, which was very thin. And that’s it. And I was cold”
5. SOUNDBITE (English) Dave Marshall, Battle of the Bulge veteran:
“And I really enjoy coming back. Enjoying the situation, the commemoration and the people. So grateful for what the Allies did. That’s nice. It’s a nice feeling.”

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Dave Marshall, Battle of the Bulge veteran:

10. SOUNDBITE (English) Choc Charleston, Battle of the Bulge veteran:
“Little after Christmas, we pretty much had stopped them from progressing any further. And we were just fighting in Belgium. And we started getting help from other people that were sent coming in, like Patton’s bunch came out of France. And that was a big help to us. And there were some Canadians and English tankers that had joined in and helped a great deal. So that was the biggest part of my memories of the Battle of the Bulge.”
11. Close of sign on Charleston’s jacket saying Choctaw Nation
12. SOUNDBITE (English) Choc Charleston, Battle of the Bulge veteran:
“We’re all God’s creation. And why? Because sometimes we are different people. Like I’m an American Indian, but you and I there is no reason we can’t get along. And if they (youth) would just take the time to be kind to each other, and not try to be so possessive – help when help is needed. I think the world would be a lot better place.”

21. SOUNDBITE (English) Andrew O. Saslav, Brigadier General and Deputy Chief of Staff US Army Europe and Africa:
“The numbers were simply in the Nazis’ favour. Any war game done then, and war game done today would have told you that they had all the advantages. But what we must remember here today, what this Battle should always remind us of, what my 27 years in uniform has taught me, is that machines and tools of war increase the brutality and the lethality of war. But the training matters, experience matters, heart and esprit de corps are essential, and they will upend the result of any war game ever done.”
