STORYLINE:
A spokesman for the Russian president warned that an "appropriate" response would follow after the Ukrainian Armed Forces hit a Russian airfield.
The Russian Defence Ministry said in a statement that Ukraine used six U.S.-made ATACMS missiles to strike a military air base in Taganrog in the southern Rostov region on Wednesday.
It said two of them were shot down by an air defence system and four others were deflected by electronic warfare assets.
The ministry said that an unidentified number of soldiers were injured by fragments of the downed missile and two buildings and three military vehicles were damaged.
“This attack with Western long-range weapons will not be left unanswered and relevant measures will be taken,” it said without elaboration.
Peskov on Thursday echoed the Russian Defence Ministry’s statement saying the response will "definitely follow."
