6. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Mao Ning, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson:
“We felt deeply surprised and dissatisfied with the statements made by the South Korean side. We don’t comment on South Korean domestic affairs but we are strongly against South Korea’s attempt to link domestic politics with China-related factors, creating the so-called ‘Chinese spies’ out of thin air and smearing normal economic and trade exchanges. This is not conducive to the health and stable development of the China-South Korean relationship.”

“We note that South Korea hasn’t reached a conclusion on the case. The relevant departments of China and South Korea have been in communication. STORYLINE:
China on Thursday warned the United States not to send the “wrong signal” to Taiwan after two senior officials from the country reportedly met members of President-elect Donald Trump’s team.
The two Taiwanese officials allegedly travelled to the U.S. this week for a meeting to establish ties with the incoming administration.
Mao Ning, a spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, urged the U.S. to abide by the “One China” policy and to “handle the Taiwan question prudently”.
She said the ministry also did not have "anything to share at present" when asked about reports that Chinese President Xi Jinping had been invited to visit the U.S. to attend Trump’s inauguration ceremony.
Mao also stressed China was “deeply surprised and dissatisfied” with comments made by South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol accusing Chinese citizens of espionage.
Yoon earlier Thursday defended his martial law decree in a televised speech and also accused Chinese citizens of spying, saying they threatened national security.
“We are strongly against South Korea’s attempt to link domestic politics with China-related factors,” said Mao.
“This is not conducive to the health and stable development of the China-South Korean relationship.”
