STORYLINE:
Displaced Syrians living in Lebanon continued returning home on Wednesday.
Hundreds of vehicles, many loaded with belongings, lined up at the Masnaa crossing point between Lebanon and Syria, waiting to cross.
Others were seen dragging their luggage as they crossed the border on foot.
"I am happy because safety has returned to Syria. In the past, there was no safety, and people were afraid of the army," said Abdallah, a Syrian man who was returning home.
The fall of Syria’s authoritarian government at the hands of insurgents has set off waves of jubilation, trepidation and alarm around the world.
Bashar Assad fled the country on Sunday, bringing to a dramatic close his nearly 14-year struggle to hold onto control as his country fragmented in a brutal civil war that became a proxy battlefield for regional and international powers.
Expatriate Syrians and many residents across the Middle East exulted at the overthrow of the leader who led his country through 14 years of civil strife that left half a million Syrians dead and displaced millions.
Others worried about still more instability rocking a region in turmoil.
