STORYLINE:
At the Masnaa Lebanon-Syria border crossing, people wait in line to stamp their passport to enter Syria.

Cars line the road past the border leading into Syria.

But the numbers are noticeably less than they were a few days ago when thousands crossed into Syria following the fall of Bashar Assad’s government.

On the opposite side of the road, hundreds of families sat waiting to be let into Lebanon.

Tanks and military vehicles lie abandoned by on a road that leads to Damascus.

In the capital, life is slowly returning to normal after the overthrow of Assad, who fled the country over the weekend and has been granted political asylum in Russia.

Private banks reopened on instructions from the central bank, said Sadi Ahmad, who runs a branch in the upscale Abu Rummaneh neighbourhood.

Shops also reopened in the cityโ€™s ancient Hamidiyeh market, where armed men and civilians could be seen buying perfume and ice cream.

A clothing shop owner, who asked not to be named for fear of retribution, said he hoped vendors would no longer have to pay bribes to security officials.
