“We featured presidents starting with George Washington. Now we’re working up to Jimmy Carter, the first president, of course, to live to be a hundred years old, but to be living at the time that the ornament was revealed last spring. And I was really touched to hear from his staff that when it was presented to him, he actually got a tear in his eye. And I’ve been told that he keeps it by his bedside in Plains so he could be reminded of this ornament in his honor this year. It has wonderful elements about him. He was our first president to attend the Naval Academy. So it has the anchor there and it has a little garland of peanut flowers and peanuts. Several images and icons about President Carter that you can learn more about him and his life, his leadership, his legacy."

STORYLINE:
The White House Historical Association is honoring President Jimmy Carter this year with it’s White House Christmas ornament.
The ornament’s anchor shape represents Carter’s service in the United States Navy.
The design also highlights historic moments from his life and presidency.
The White House ornament has been released since 1981 and honors a new president annually.
Stewart McLaurin, the president of the White House Historical Association, said that Carter is the first president to be living at the time that the ornament was revealed.
