You will understand how diversity functions, how different tribes lives in harmony yet retain their own cultural identity."

STORYLINE:
Men dressed like warriors stabbed the air with spears, reenacting a form of tribal warfare their ancestors practised in centuries past.

Others, wearing tribal costumes, sang and danced, keeping alive customs that have passed down through generations.

These were some of the scenes greeting visitors to the 10-day Hornbill festival in Kohima, capital city of India’s remote Nagaland state that borders Myanmar.

Nagaland, where Allied troops fought against the Japanese during the Second World War, is home to the Nagas, an Indigenous group spread across several northeastern Indian states.

Named after the Indian Hornbill, a large forest bird, the festival is Nagaland’s biggest tourist draw, and seeks to showcase the rich tradition and cultural heritage of the state’s indigenous tribes, each with its distinct festivals and character.

In a largely Hindu country, most Nagas are Christians and they are ethnically distinct from other Indian groups.

Gaurav Sharma, a tourist at the festival, encouraged anyone who has had enough of what he called the "monoculture" of city life to pay a visit to the festival.

"You will understand how diversity functions, how different tribes lives in harmony yet retain their own cultural identity," he said.
