STORYLINE:
Hundreds of people bid farewell to a member of Mexico’s lower house of Congress who was shot dead in eastern Mexico.
Benito Aguas Atlahua, a member of the country’s ruling coalition, died on Monday night in hospital in the Gulf coast state of Veracruz.
Aguas Atlahua had been sworn in to Congress just three months earlier.
He had previously served as mayor of Zongolica, an Indigenous region of the state, where bereaved supporters gathered to bid him goodbye.
Following a local custom, people threw flower petals and burned a tree resin called copal over the coffin during the funeral procession on Tuesday.
The mountain region of Veracruz is among the poorest in the country.
It is also considered one of the most dangerous due to migrant smuggling as well as fuel and cargo theft.
Aguas Atlahua’s death came two months after the grisly decapitation of a mayor in the southern state of Guerrero, just a week after he took office.
