“Africa needs climate justice. The continent stands on the frontlines of the climate crisis. Despite causing minimal emissions, climate change is pummelling your people and pounding your economies. Africa is warming faster than the global average. We must limit global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius to stop this crisis from spiralling even further out of control.”

STORYLINE:
U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said on Wednesday that the end of the fall of Bashar Assad in Syria had brought "hope" to the Middle East and pledged the global body’s support to ensure a smooth transition of power.
“We also see some signs of hope and signs of hope namely coming from the end of the Syrian dictatorship," Guterres said during a visit to Pretoria where he met with South African International Relations Minister, Ronald Lamola.
"The U.N. is totally committed to supporting a smooth transition of power with an inclusive political process in which the rights of all minorities will be fully respected and paving the way towards a united, sovereign Syria with its territorial integrity fully reestablished," he added.
Guterres is currently on a trip to southern Africa, which started with an address at the G20 sherpas meeting as well as he talks with Lamola.
He is also expected to meet with President Cyril Ramaphosa.
His trip comes shortly after South Africa recently took over the presidency of the G20.
