STORYLINE:
A plume of black smoke was seen rising from a building in Damascus on Tuesday, days after the fall of Bashar Assad’s government.
Nearby, two men waved a Syrian opposition flag from their perch atop a tall tower.
It was not possible to confirm the origin of the smoke but several Israeli airstrikes hit different regions of Syria overnight and Israeli troops seized a border buffer zone.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu meanwhile testified in his long-running corruption trial.
Israel denied its forces were advancing toward Damascus after they had earlier moved into the buffer zone inside Syria.
Associated Press reporters in the capital heard heavy airstrikes overnight and into Tuesday on the city and its suburbs.
Photographs circulating online showed destroyed missile launchers, helicopters and warplanes.
Life in Damascus was meanwhile slowly returning to normal after a lightning advance by rebels overthrew Syrian President Bashar Assad over the weekend, ending his family’s half-century rule but raising concerns over what comes next.
