6. SOUNDBITE (English) Mary Ellen O’Connell, Professor of Law and International Peace Studies at the University of Notre Dame:
"Now we’re seeing outside states at this next most critical and uncertain time come in again: Israel is bombing. Israel has sent tanks for the first time since 1973 across the occupation line that that it holds since 1967. It looks like it may take advantage of the chaos right now to take more territory from Syria, that will have a destabilizing impact as whatever forces eventually emerge, as has been strong enough, will contest that in the future. That’s a recipe for further destabilization. The United States is bombing. The United States has had troops stationed in Syria since the Trump administration. Those troops are in a very vulnerable, very dangerous situation. And this bombing that the United States has carried out quite extensively is only adding to the chaos."

10. SOUNDBITE (English) Mary Ellen O’Connell, Professor of Law and International Peace Studies at the University of Notre Dame:
"They (HTS) say that they’ve changed and they’re no longer following the ideology of a of of al Qaida. They seem, in fact, to be following much closer to the pattern of ISIS. Al Qaida did not seek to create a caliphate and to take territory. They were using their means to use violence and terrorism to convince the West to leave the Middle East. The ISIS pattern is to try to take territory and to build states. That’s what HTS seems to have patterned their actions on. They do not seem as brutal when they are in control and they’ve been in control in Idlib province. So we can see that they … they are they have been accused of using torture against opposition. So, this is not a group which people should feel confident is going to be the answer to Assad."
