Lawmakers in South Korea have voted to impeach President Yoon Suk Yeol. The decision in the country’s parliament follows his failed attempt to impose martial law earlier this month. Yoon will be suspended from office, but South Korea’s constitutional court has six months to decide on his removal from power. In a speech after the vote, Yoon said he would step aside but not give up.
Protesters began celebrating on the streets of Seoul the moment news of his impeachment broke. Massive demonstrations calling for Yoon to go started soon after his martial law declaration plunged the country into political chaos.
