STORYLINE:
Hundreds of displaced Syrians were returning from Lebanon to Syria on Monday, with dozens of cars lining up at the border crossing.
Displaced Syrians, dragging their luggage and carrying bags, crowded the Masnaa crossing with Syria, trying to cross the border on foot.
Issam Masri, a 68-year-old Syrian who has been displaced from Damascus, said as he was preparing to cross the border that his "happiness is indescribable and priceless."
Syrian President Bashar Assad’s government has fallen on Sunday after opposition fighters entered Damascus following a stunning advance.
It was the first time opposition forces had reached Damascus since 2018 when Syrian troops recaptured areas on the outskirts of the capital following a years-long siege.
The night before, opposition forces had taken the central city of Homs, Syria’s third largest, as government forces abandoned it.
The rapidly developing events have shaken the region. Lebanon said it was closing all its land border crossings with Syria except for Masnaa, which links Beirut with Damascus. Jordan also closed a border crossing with Syria.
