STORYLINE:
The sound of gunfire rang out across Ummayyad Square in central Damascus as Syrians adjust to life after 50 years of Assad family rule.
Early Monday, the city looked busy with the sound of traffic being drowned out by loud gunfire.
Russian state news agencies were reporting that President Bashar Assad and his family had arrived in Moscow and were given asylum.
