STORYLINE:
Crowds gathered in Damascus on Sunday to celebrate the fall of Bashar Assad’s government with chants, prayers and the occasional gunfire after opposition fighters entered the Syrian capital following a stunning advance.

It was the first time opposition forces had reached Damascus since 2018 when Syrian troops recaptured areas on the outskirts of the capital following a years-long siege.

Revellers filled central Umayyad Square, where the Defense Ministry is located.

Men fired celebratory gunshots and some waved the three-starred Syrian flag that predates the Assad government and was adopted by the revolutionaries.

“It is almost like a dream. I need someone to wake me up. What great joy for the people. There is love. As if they were waiting for us for a longtime to liberate them from this dirt," said Abu Laith, a fighter from Latakia who just arrived in Damascus.

Pictures of Assad were destroyed and many ministries were ransacked.

The Iranian Embassy in Damascus was ransacked after apparently having been abandoned.

Judge Khitam Haddad, an aide to the justice minister in the outgoing government who came to check on the city’s courthouse, said work in the court will resume soon.
