STORYLINE:
Will Smith, Cynthia Erivo, Emily Blunt, Michael Douglas, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Michelle Yeoh and Aamir Khan were among the stars walking the red carpet in Saudi Arabia, ahead of the opening ceremony of the fourth Red Sea International Film Festival, Thursday.
The ceremony included honors for Blunt, Vin Diesel and icon of Indian cinema Aamir Khan.
“It’s a great honor and I’m really happy and I feel very grateful for the honor of my work," said Khan, on the carpet.
The festival – one of the fastest growing film festivals in the Middle East – will present over 120 films from 81 countries, in Jeddah’s historic Al-Balad district.
16 features will compete for the Yusr Awards, highlighting work from filmmakers across the Arab region, Asia, and Africa. Winners will be selected by a jury led by Spike Lee.
"I’m going to see some great films by young filmmakers that I probably never heard of, but I’ll know about a lot of them after this festival,” smiled Lee on the carpet.
Competition titles include include Lotfi Achour’s “Red Path,” featured at the Locarno Film Festival, and Mehdi M. Barsaoui’s “Aïcha,” a Venice Film Festival selection. Also competing is Reema Kagti’s “Superboys of Malegaon,” about an amateur filmmaker’s dream in the small town of Malegaon.
