“The one-China principle has long been confirmed by UN General Assembly Resolution 2758 and is a recognized basic norm of international relations and a universal consensus of the international community. Reaffirming and adhering to the one-China principle is legitimate and aboveboard anywhere in the world, and there is no such thing as so-called interference in internal affairs.”

7. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Lin Jian, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson:
“The separatist activities of Taiwan independence forces and the connivance and support from external forces pose the greatest threat to peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. Lai Ching-te and DPP authorities have been engaging in Taiwan independence activities under various guises. But no matter what they say or do, they will never change the fact that Taiwan is part of China, nor will they stop the overwhelming trend that China will and must be reunited. To seek independence by soliciting foreign support is doomed to failure.”

STORYLINE:
China’s Foreign Ministry on Friday expressed opposition to Paraguay’s decision to expel a Chinese envoy for allegedly interfering in country’s domestic affairs.

In a curt statement, Paraguay’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it had revoked the visa of Xu Wei, a senior Chinese envoy to Latin America who was in Paraguay for an annual UNESCO meeting, declaring him persona non grata “over interference in internal affairs."

The day before, Xu skipped the UNESCO session and instead turned up at Congress in Paraguay’s capital of Asunción, where he caused a diplomatic stir by calling on Paraguay to ditch Taiwan, the self-governing democratic island of 23 million people that China claims as its territory.

At a daily news briefing in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said the act was “completely unreasonable and unfounded” and “seriously violating international norms.”

Describing the one-China principle as a “universal consensus,” Lin insisted that “reaffirming and adhering to the one-China principle is legitimate and aboveboard anywhere in the world.”

Paraguay is the only nation in South America and one of just 12 worldwide that recognizes Taiwan as a country.

The Paraguayan government has stayed firm in its commitment — even as Beijing ramps up its lobbying of foreign counterparts to stop recognizing the island.

Lin once again warned the Taiwanese authorities that their attempt to “seek independence by soliciting foreign support is doomed to failure” after Taiwan’s leader Lai Ching-te wrapped up his first overseas tour since taking office in May.

Lai’s trip to the Pacific, which included U.S. stops in Hawaii and Guam, took him into the heart of a maritime region where China is jockeying with the United States and its allies for influence and control.

Trump said in a social media post that Perdue “brings valuable expertise to help build our relationship with China.”
