STORYLINE:
Bibliophiles and avid readers hungry for knowledge can stock up on books at the Iraq International Book Fair, which is currently running in Baghdad.
The exhibition features 80,000 book titles by both local and international publishers.
“We toured the exhibition halls and we noticed that there are many books on history, philosophy and even scientific books," said Enas Abd Ali, a visitor.
"Thank God that it is still the case that people are turning up to check out books," she added.
Publishing houses from 17 countries including Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia are participating in the event.
The Qatari section at the book fair featured books by authors and poets as well as educational books by Qatar’s Ministry of Education.
The book fair opened on Dec.4, continuing to welcome visitors and book-lovers until Dec. 14.
This is the fifth book fair organized by al-Mada Foundation for Media, Culture and Arts, but Baghdad’s history with book goes much further back.
In September, Baghdad hosted its 25th state-organized book fair which boasted more than a million book titles from over 21 countries.
Baghdad has a literary heritage that dates back to the Abbasid era, from the 9th to the 13th century.
"Cairo writes, Beirut publishes, and Baghdad reads," goes a renowned Arab proverb that praises Iraqis’ appetite for reading.
