STORYLINE:
South Korean civic groups and main opposition party supporters gathered at parliament in Seoul on Thursday to condemn South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol for declaring martial law.
Participants demanded Yoon step down and urged the ruling party to vote in favour of impeachment, which will be put up for a vote on Saturday evening.
36-year-old office worker Kwon Oh Min said Tuesday’s declaration of martial law was the same as the country pointing guns at its own citizens.
"If the answer to not let this happen ever again is impeachment, he has to be impeached," Kwon said.
The motion to impeach President Yoon Suk Yeol was reported to the South Korean parliament on Thursday morning.
By law, an impeachment motion must be put to a vote between 24 and 72 hours after the motion is reported to plenary session.
