Joy and hope as Syrians in Turkey weigh decision to return home after Assad’s fall | DW News

Crowds of Syrian refugees living in Turkey have been heading to border crossings in order to return to their home country, following the fall of President Bashar al-Assad’s government.

For many the prospect of returning is a hopeful one, as DW’s Julia Hahn found out first hand at the Cilvegozu crossing, near the town of Antakya, southern Turkey.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said his government will do everything it can to help Syrians return safely if they wish to do so.

Many of Turkey’s three million strong Syrian refugee population have built deep roots in Turkey after many years spent in exile. With the security situation and the direction of Syria’s new transitional government in flux, many appear to be carefully considering the decision to return.
