STORYLINE:
Blood-stained belongings and burned down shelters were all that was left behind in the aftermath of Israeli airstrikes Wednesday that tore through the Muwasi tent camp for displaced Palestinians in Khan Younis.
The latest Israeli assault on the tent city that Israel designated as a safe humanitarian zone killed at least 21 people, according to the head of a nearby hospital.
The Israeli military said its aircraft struck senior Hamas militants “involved in terrorist activities” in the area.
The tent city which houses hundreds of thousands of people, has been repeatedly targeted during the war.
The aftermath at the tent site Thursday morning showed large piles of rubble and displaced people’s belongings, most of which were burned.
In the midst of the destruction, the body of a dead person covered with a blanket was on the ground surrounded by nearby torn mattresses and tarps, a blood-stained plastic basket, a child’s doll, and spilled lentils.
“Those who say that Muwasi is a humanitarian zone and safe for displaced people. It’s not safe. Nowhere in the Gaza Strip is safe," said a displaced man on site.
Dozens gathered at the morgue inside Nasser Hospiutal mourning the loss of their loved ones.
Several children stood on the side wailing and crying, while women tried to console each other. One woman cried as she tried to clean up the blood off one body bag.
The 21 dead bodies were covered in blankets and others in white shrouds and placed on the ground for funeral prayers on Thursday.
