“The immediate impact of this escalation is on the people of northwest Syria. We’ve heard that 115,000 people have been displaced during the last week, and the reason why they’ve been displaced during the last week is that hospitals have been hit and schools have been hit. I mean in Idlib city alone there was a significant escalation in air strikes and in shelling on the first two days of December.”

STORYLINE:
Over 100,000 people have been displaced as a result of intensified fighting in Syria’s northwest, a top UN humanitarian coordinator said on Wednesday.
The latest flareup in Syria’s long civil war comes after forces opposed to President Bashar Assad ousted his troops from Aleppo and seizing towns and villages in southern parts of the northwestern Idlib province, likely exploiting the fact that Assad’s main regional and international backers were preoccupied with their own wars.
It is the first opposition attack on the city since 2016, when a brutal Russian air campaign retook the northwestern city for Assad after rebel forces had initially seized it.
The offensive is being led by the jihadi HTS as well as an umbrella group of Turkish-backed Syrian militias called the Syrian National Army.
Some 115,000 people have been displaced in the space of a week as a result of strikes on schools and hospitals, according to David Carden, the UN’s Deputy Regional Humanitarian Coordinator for the Syria Crisis:
"The immediate impact of this escalation is on the people of northwest Syria", Carden said, speaking during a tour of a camp for internally displaced people.
He urged all parties to comply with international law and ensure civilians were protected.
