"We left Aleppo at 9am. The situation at the campus was very chaotic. All the students were leaving. We hardly found a bus to take us. We left on the road of (inaudible) and we stayed (on the road) for six hours. We struggled on this road because we usually don’t spend more than two hours on the highway. We struggled and it was very cold and windy. It was cold and the struggle was mainly from the length of the trip. Thank God we arrived to Homs. When we reached Homs we directly went to the university campus. We were welcomed by the director of the campus who gave us a room to stay in.”

8. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Maher Ibrahim, director of dorms at Homs University:
"The students continue to arrive until this moment. The total number of students we welcomed is around 340. In the end we are a university campus with limited resources. In case the numbers go up, we will certainly need support on other fronts, including things like mattresses, pillows and covers. Also, we don’t have daily supplies, with students arriving with nothing on them and they need supplies. Honestly, we don’t have those things to provide them."

11. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Youssef Choueib, displaced from Aleppo:
"The war in Syria started in 2011, in Aleppo. I was displaced from Aleppo around 2013. I went to Lattakia and Tartous. I was displaced to many areas. After the situation was resolved a bit, we went back to Aleppo. We fixed our house and lived in it but then the earthquake hit. The earthquake is from God almighty. We were displaced once again, to Homs this time. I put my children in school and at this point the displacement was over. I also left and thought I want to be back home, to my neighbourhood and people."

13. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Youssef Choueib, displaced from Aleppo:
"We left Aleppo around five days ago. As soon as it was hit, we left it. For five days we were on the road from Aleppo to Homs. We faced cold, hunger and thirst until we reached Homs. You see all sort of things on the road. There was no safety at all. We thought we either make it or not. Thank God we arrived safely. Thank God.”

STORYLINE:
About 3,000 displaced Syrians who were living in the Hama countryside and Aleppo have made their way to the city of Homs as fierce fighting intensifies between government forces and insurgents in the country.
Those who arrived and found shelter in schools told The Associated Press that they spent hours on the road, many struggling to afford surging prices of petrol.
Over 340 students from Aleppo had taken shelter in Homs’ University campus, officials said.
In a school-turned-shelter, Youssef Choueib sat with his four children around him.
Choueib said he fled Aleppo to Homs for the third time since 2011.
"We left Aleppo around five days ago. As soon as it was hit, we left it," he said.
