"If martial law is declared it will surely be chaotic but for the sake of the country we have to right the ship. It is regrettable martial law was lifted and there are pros and cons, but the state of South Korea worries me. I have lived long enough but I want our children to live in a free democratic country peacefully and happily. But that is not what is happening. Those cunning Democratic Party lawmakers have taken over and are denying the government its right to rule. As a citizen I don’t understand this."

5. SOUNDBITE (Korean) Jung Seung-il, 44, office worker:
"I woke up in the middle of the night to hear the news, and I thought I was dreaming. It was just hard to believe this happened in our country in the 21st century. As a father I was just concerned what kind of country my child would live in the future. What we need now is to overcome this crisis and take this opportunity to make a better South Korea."

STORYLINE:
South Korea’s opposition parties Wednesday submitted a motion to impeach President Yoon Suk Yeol over the shocking and short-lived martial law that drew heavily armed troops to encircle parliament before lawmakers climbed walls to reenter the building and unanimously voted to lift his order.

In Seoul on Wednesday, residents had mixed emotions on Yoon’s move, with some agreeing it was needed, and others deeming it a rash decision.

Park No-hwa, 77, said it was regrettable that martial law had been lifted.

He had seen it as an opportunity for the government to normalize the country after being impeded by the opposition party.

But 19-year old Oh Tae-yoon, thought Yoon’s declaration of martial law was a rash choice and urged South Korean lawmakers to not let this happen again.

Opposition parties submitted the impeachment motion just hours after parliament unanimously voted to cancel Yoon’s declaration, forcing him to lift martial law about six hours after it began.

Impeaching Yoon requires the support of two-thirds of the National Assembly and at least six of the nine Constitutional Court justices.

The liberal opposition Democratic Party holds a majority in the 300-seat parliament and has called for Yoon’s resignation.

A vote on the impeachment motion could be held as early as Friday, Democratic Party lawmaker Kim Yong-min said.

Yoon’s martial law declaration, the first of its kind in more than 40 years, harkened to South Korea’s past military-backed governments when authorities occasionally proclaimed martial law and other decrees that allowed them to station combat soldiers, tanks and armored vehicles on streets or at public places like schools to prevent anti-government demonstrations.

Such scenes of military intervention had not been seen since South Korea achieved a genuine democracy in the late 1980s.

Yoon ordered martial law without warning in a speech late Tuesday where he vowed to eliminate “anti-state” forces he said were plotting rebellion and accused the main opposition parties of supporting the country’s rival, North Korea.
