‘I’m here to express how furious I am about the event last night, the attempt to impose the martial law, which is (a) very anti-democratic attempt. And fortunately, we could stop him. But the thing is, still those who tried this crazy move they are still in their seats and until they step down, we don’t feel we’re safe enough. So we are living in a democratic society. So I’m here to make those people who tried this undemocratic move, accountable. And also people will be on the streets until they really step down."

"This is not really a common thing here. But once they tried and if they don’t learn a lesson here, if they try these things they have to step down. This should be the lesson that we have to make this time because if they don’t get this lesson or if we don’t make them learn this lesson, there might be another right wing to use this method again. So this is a very important moment I think."

STORYLINE:
Crowds gathered in the South Korean capital, Seoul, on Wednesday, marching to the presidential palace as they called for the resignation of President Yoon Suk Yeol.

Yoon imposed martial law late Tuesday out of frustration with the opposition, vowing to eliminate “anti-state” forces as he struggles against opponents who control parliament and that he accuses of sympathizing with communist North Korea.

The country’s 190 lawmakers voted down Yoon’s martial law decree, with it lasting only about six hours before his Cabinet formally lifted it around 4:30 a.m.

South Korea’s opposition parties on Wednesday submitted a motion to impeach Yoon over the shocking and short-lived martial law.

Sitting down with candles, protesters chanted and waved placards calling for the president’s resignation.

People then marched on to the presidential palace, carrying large banners and flags, as they continued to chant.

Local resident, Sumin Oh, who attended the rally, said she was "furious" about Yoon’s declaration attempt.

She stressed that Yoon and his ministers must be held "accountable" and demanded they step down.

"And until they step down, we don’t feel we’re safe enough," she added.

Impeaching Yoon would require the support of two-thirds of parliament, and at least six justices of the nine-member Constitutional Court would have to endorse it to remove him from office.

The motion, submitted jointly by the main liberal opposition Democratic Party and five smaller opposition parties, could be put to a vote as early as Friday.
