STORYLINE:
Awards season kicked off in New York City Monday night with the 34th edition of the Gotham Awards.
The Gothams shine a spotlight on the trailblazers of storytelling, giving early recognition and media buzz to the writers, directors, producers, and actors who are shaking things up in the world of entertainment.
The evening’s tributes included Angelina Jolie with the Performer Tribute, Timothée Chalamet and James Mangold for the Visionary Tribute, Zendaya receiving the Spotlight Tribute, and "Sing Sing" (A24) taking home the Social Justice Tribute.
After receiving her tribute, Jolie spoke to the Associated Press.
"I think Gotham’s wonderful because it celebrates independent film. And there’s a lot and I and I, of course, love New York and being here and and it was it was a real honor to play Maria and to work with this cast and crew and extraordinary director. And I feel very lucky, very fortunate. I worked hard, but I was very supported. By amazing people."
Nominees are chosen by a diverse group of film critics, journalists, festival programmers, and curators. Winners are then selected by separate juries of writers, directors, actors, producers, editors, and other industry professionals who play a direct role in the filmmaking process.
