“We re-animated the Krampus tradition in Hollabrunn 20 years ago. It’s about this eerie fascination and the getting together of so many groups from all over Austria. You can see from our audience that the people are still excited about our masks and costumes, which are truly pieces of art. It’s true handicraft and the people like it.”

11. SOUNDBITE (German) Christian Oberlerchner, ‘Krampus’ from Obermillstadt, Carinthia:
“For us Krampus is a tradition. We want to celebrate this custom and pass it on to the youngsters. There are so many customs these days which are decaying and are being forgotten. But we want to celebrate it.”

STORYLINE:
Several thousand people on Saturday gathered on the town square of Hollabrunn, Austria, to watch the traditional Krampus run.
Fifteen groups from all over Austria paraded through the streets to tease and cane those who dared to get too close to the devil-like creatures.
In German and Austrian folklore, Krampus is the evil companion of Santa Claus who punishes bad kids by beating them and putting them into a woven wicker basket on his back.
The Krampus tradition had already died out in many Austrian towns, but the members of the local “Dionysos Pass” group renewed the tradition 20 years ago in Hollabrunn.
“You can see from our audience that the people are still excited about our masks and costumes, which are truly pieces of art. It’s true handicraft and the people like it.” says Viktor Danzinger of Dionysos Pass.
The reinvigorated custom now mixes traditional cowbells with rock-music and pyrotechnics.
Different groups compete for the most outlandish and scary costumes while keeping many traditional elements like the shaggy furs and cowbells.
The event in Hollabrunn is known for being less tame than other Krampus runs. The actors are free to tear down barriers and cane those brave enough to stand in the front rows.
