The foreign ministers of Iran and Turkey say they will resume diplomatic efforts together with Russia to end the Syrian conflict. Turkey backs the rebel forces who seized the city of Aleppo in a lightning offensive over the weekend. Iran and Russia support the regime of President Bashar al-Assad. The rebel advance marks the most serious development in the Syrian war since 2020
So, who are the anti-government forces in Syria and what do they want? One key player is the group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS). It already controls much of northwest Syria and is now expanding its reach.
