STORYLINE:
Twelve-million LEDs will light up the streets and squares of Madrid over the next 40 days as the city celebrates the Christmas holidays.
Spanish football team coach Luis de la Fuente was given the task of turning on the lights across the city from the central Puerta del Sol square.
Fireworks were set off streaming into the sky next to the massive Christmas tree on Thursday.
