STORYLINE:
Hundreds of activists protested in front of the European Parliament in Strasbourg on Wednesday, in solidarity with the Palestinian people in Gaza.
Waving Palestinian flags, protesters chanted slogans and called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.
While the ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon could significantly calm the tensions that have inflamed the region, the deal does little directly to resolve the much deadlier war that has raged in Gaza since the Hamas attack on southern Israel in October 2023 that killed 1,200 people.
The death toll in the Gaza Strip from the 13-month-old war between Israel and Hamas has surpassed 44,000, local health officials said Thursday.
The Gaza Health Ministry does not distinguish between civilians and combatants in its count, but it has said that more than half of the fatalities are women and children.
The Israeli military says it has killed over 17,000 militants, without providing evidence.
