I decided to come down with my family, come down and stand with the people who are like us and with my family. It is scary, this fighting is frightening. It is not clear, and we don’t know how it will end. We came down and are hoping it will end soon."

5. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Ahmad Khateeb, local resident:
“Our enemy has no rules of engagement. It is so bad. The last stages have been the most scary. The final stage is very bad. This is the first time they have threaten central Beirut and not only Dahiyeh so that is why it is so difficult. Everyone is scared. The enemy’s barbarism has no balance. We are hoping it ends and we hope our people stay OK after everything we have seen. It was very difficult."

“I was at home having lunch when I received a call from (relatives) in Syria asking me ‘Are you still home and haven’t left the building?’ I asked them what was wrong and they said they will hit Hamra, and Cornish Mazraa. Anyway, I packed quickly as you can see. I live with my mother and we came down. We live in Koraitem. The streets were empty and ambulances filled Hamra. I was the last one to leave the building. We came to the hospital because we were told it is the safest place. They asked us to stay away from glass in case it breaks. I was able to get my mother inside since she has a heart disease and I stayed outside.”

STORYLINE:
Residents in central Beirut late Tuesday were seen fleeing from their homes after the Israeli army issued evacuation warnings for four areas in the city.
Ahmad Khateeb, a musician and artist who performs in a renowned theatre in Beirut’s Hamra neighbourhood, fled to the city’s seaside promenade with seven members of his family following the warnings.
Among those with him were his parents, his sister and her family, who had already fled to Hamra from another area in central Beirut following an Israeli strike in late September.
“Today, for the first time since the start of this conflict, a threat targets Hamra and Ras Beirut,” Khateeb told The Associated Press.
"It is scary, this fighting is frightening…We came down and are hoping it will end soon," he added.
Outside the American University of Beirut Medical Centre, dozens of people sought refuge, hoping the hospital would not be targeted.
Among them was Rima Abdkhaluk, who sat on a sidewalk with a backpack on her back.
Originally from Syria, Abdkhaluk moved to Lebanon in 2011 after the Syrian war broke out.
"I asked them what was wrong and they said they will hit Hamra, and Cornish Mazraa."
