1. SOUNDBITE (English) Antony Blinken, US Secretary of State:
"Thank you my friend. And I think I can simply say that I subscribe to everything the foreign minister (Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani) said. Simply put, the relationship, the partnership, between Italy and the United States has never been stronger. And that’s a tribute to Italy’s leadership, it’s a tribute to the strong leadership of Prime Minister Meloni (Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni), my friend the foreign minister (Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani), and we see that of course through Italy’s G7 year, I couldn’t be more grateful for the collaboration. Our countries are standing together, along with other partners, to deal with the ongoing Russian aggression against Ukraine. We’re standing together to deal with some of the challenges posed by China. We’re standing together in looking to bring a sustainable, lasting peace in the Middle East. We’re standing together in looking to what we can do to address the needs and the interests of the global majority countries. In these areas and so many more, Italy, the United States, our G7 partners, are the strongest of collaborators and again, so much of this is thanks to the great leadership we see here, with the foreign minister (Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani) and the prime minister (Meloni). Thank you my friend."

STORYLINE:
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said he stands with Italy on countering challenges posed by Russia and China and in bringing sustainable peace to the Middle East, in remarks on the sidelines of the Group of Seven meeting outside Rome on Tuesday.

Blinken, at his final G7 before the Biden administration leaves office, thanked the Italian foreign minister for the collaboration over the years and said Washington was still standing with its allies.

While the G7 meeting was dominated Monday by the Mideast conflicts, the attention turned Tuesday to Ukraine.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha was on hand and briefed the ministers on Russian attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, according to the Italian foreign minister.

The G7 has been at the forefront of providing military and economic support for Ukraine since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, and G7 members are particularly concerned about how a Trump administration will change the U.S. approach.

Tensions have only heightened since Russia attacked Ukraine last week with an experimental, hypersonic ballistic missile that escalated the nearly 33-month-old war.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said the strike was retaliation for Kyiv’s use of US and British longer-range missiles capable of striking deeper into Russian territory.

Meanwhile, Israeli officials said Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s security Cabinet was set to convene Tuesday to discuss a proposed ceasefire with the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah in Lebanon.
