“Mimi is the oldest chimpanzee in Europe. She is 62 years old, and I met her when she came to our zoo 6 or 7 years ago and since then we have been taking care of her.”

“ She is the leader of the group of chimpanzees, Koko and Izi the two male chimpanzee who often get into arguments and she steps in between to calm them down. Mimi loves flowers very much and writing on papers, the smell of flowers in spring, she goes to the meadows, searches, digs smells and eats. We always give her roses for the 8th of March, like a girl she is so happy, so joyful about it all.”

” She behaves like a mother. She calms ( the other chimps) them down, like children who have argued or fought. These are the kinds of characteristic she has.”

“I believe she receives daily love, as you can see for yourself. My colleagues take wonderful care of her. You know, we continue to do our best to ensure she has everything she needs in these years—to feel loved, cared for, and to have her basic needs met, like the right type of food and preparation for her well-being. Juices, puddings, and all kinds of things are made for her to make every day interesting. Still, I think I am most proud of my colleagues, who are given their all to ensure she has a dignified life in her retirement years.”

One of the world’s oldest living chimps is Mimi the Bonobo.
Sixty-something-year-old Mimi resides in Skopje Zoo, where she enjoys flowers and marmalade straight from the jar.

A resident of Skopje Zoo, Mimi, a female bonobo chimpanzee, has become a symbol of resilience and hope after enduring a lifetime of mistreatment and hardship.
