1. Various of plumes of smoke seen rising over southern suburbs of Beirut, UPSOUND of explosions
STORYLINE:
Multiple explosions were seen in Beirut’s southern suburbs on Tuesday morning, as Group of Seven and Arab ministers awaited news from Israeli officials on the proposed ceasefire deal between Israel and Hezbollah.
The explosions – which caused loud booms and huge plumes of smoke – were captured following each other consecutively on Tuesday.
Israeli officials said Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s security Cabinet was set to convene Tuesday to discuss the proposed ceasefire.
Among the issues that remain is an Israeli demand to reserve the right to act should Hezbollah violate its obligations under the emerging deal.
The European Union’s top diplomat said there were “no excuses” for Israel to refuse to implement a ceasefire with the Lebanese militant group, saying all its security concerns had been addressed in the US-French-brokered deal.
Josep Borrell, the outgoing EU foreign policy chief, called for increased pressure on Israel to blunt extremists in the government who are refusing to accept the deal.
Speaking on the sidelines of a G7 meeting in Italy on Tuesday, Borrell warned that if a ceasefire is not implemented, “Lebanon will fall apart.”
The meeting gathered ministers from Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States, in the last G7 encounter of the Biden administration.
For the first time, the G7 ministers were joined on Monday by their counterparts from Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar, the so-called “Arab Quintet,” as well as the Secretary General of the Arab League.
The deal seeks to push Hezbollah and Israeli troops out of southern Lebanon.
Israeli warplanes bombed the Lebanese capital of Beirut and parts of southern Lebanon and the country’s Health Ministry said 31 people were killed on Monday.
Hezbollah has fired thousands of rockets into Israeli military bases, cities and towns, including some 250 projectiles on Sunday.
Hezbollah began attacking Israel on Oct. 8, 2023, a day after Hamas’ attack on southern Israel, setting off more than a year of fighting.
That escalated into all-out war in September with massive Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon and an Israeli ground invasion of the country’s south.
